It was autumn in the northern land of The Shining Mountains. A young Cree maiden, daughter of chief White Thunder Cloud, had just turned sixteen and in love. Her future shone before her as the sunlight pouring through parting clouds. Suddenly, by a violent twist of fate, she is cast out of her tribe and forbidden to return, by her own father. Running from the only life she had ever known, fearful of what lie ahead and of the very land she had come to know and love, Little Whitefish finds shelter in an empty dwelling made by the Pale Ones, the White Men, whom her tribe shunned.
