Works dealing with romantic love and women's lives were by no means rare in the epic literature of Korea up to the 16th century, but yadam (unofficial circulated narrative), which was in vogue beginning in the 17th century, saw diversification and expansion in characters and subject matter. In addition, yadam often approached affairs of the heart from the viewpoint of the conflict between social norms and individual desires rather than at the level of simple romanticized love. In spite of the various shortcomings of these stories, they are all good examples of the yadam genre, which generally encompasses episodic anecdotes of real-life events and well-developed works of fiction.
