The poems tell of a young man's life, from his roots in Chicago to his travels across America.After working in the trucking industry and traveling throughout the country, Jerome E. Butler survived a near fatal truck accident that left him shaken and still recuperating.Living in Bachelorhood explores the poet's life experiences, including being "viewed as a sex symbol (by the age of 16 to present date), a scholar, street smart individual, unique person and going through liking the persona and disliking the persona." In his job as a truck driver, he met a vast number of people in many locations. He has also lived in over six different regions of the country, and all by his twenty-sixth birthday. Butler says his life has "brought a great deal of philosophy, personal knowledge, some opinion, but basically a unique yet honest reality of life and culture as a whole.
