Elisha seeks his son who was not among the dead in the pogrom that eliminated his village. Ultimately, he finds him being cared for by Helena, Chmielnicki's mistress. A poignant friendship and lasting love develops between these two. With a need for vengeance Elisha, and Stefan, develop a small fighting force to harass and humiliate their enemy. They must rely on intelligence, instinct and determination to survive against monumental odds. This narrative is developed in a setting of fact based historical events.
