After spending over 35 years in law enforcement primarily in the areas of critical incident, mass casualty, and terrorist response operations in the capacity of incident commander, planner, and trainer, I can unequivocally state that Managing Critical Incidents and Large-Scale Event Security is the definitive textbook addressing these type of responses at all levels, from planning to implementation.
What makes this textbook unique is that the authors speak and write from their own experience, using rea- life situations, as opposed to other authors that speak and write from others’ experiences.
I have worked with both Dr. Nunez and Dr. Vendrell and have the utmost respect for both.
Dr. Nunez spent many years as the Commander of the Miami Dade Police Department (MDPD) Bomb Squad which required him to plan for and respond, both tactically for spontaneously occurring events and strategically for preplanned events, from concept, to training, to implementation. He speaks of several of these operations for which he had a significant role in his book. Dr. Vendrell spent many years in the MDPD Training Bureau, during which time he implemented cutting edge technologies in training to realistically replicate situations MDPD personnel might encounter in operational settings.
Both these individuals are consummate professionals and passionate about their work. I am honored to recommend this textbook to my peers and others as a guide to successfully respond to critical incidents and large scale events.
—Louis Battle, MPA, MS, Chief of Police, Town of Warrenton, VA
Dr. Eloy Nuñez and Dr. Ernie Vendrell have rigorously researched and set forth highly-specific guidelines for administrators who are responsible for managing critical incidents as well as for the security for large-scale events. These two highly-experienced law enforcement administrators have drawn upon their many years of collective experience as well as the experience of dozens of other practitioner/administrators to write this outstanding book.
This book contains highly-specific guidelines, case studies, checklists, photographs, and explanations of how to most effectively apply both theory and practice in dealing with critical incidents and security issues. It is a truly valuable book.
Drs. Nuñez and Vendrell are to be complimented for writing a book that will very likely become the gold standard by which books on this topic will be compared.
-—Dr. Leonard Territo, Distinguished Professor, Saint Leo University
The authors challenge Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) precepts of four phases of critical incident management. Advocating for a three-phase model, Nuñez and Vendrell suggest that mitigation is intrinsic throughout all stages and therefore is not a phase in and of itself. Throughout the text, the authors advocate for mitigation during the preparedness, response, and recovery phases of critical incident management.
Written with the critical incident manager in mind, the book delivers sound advice, providing readers with several checklists for effective training and management of such events.
