The author relates, "My name is Marjorie Helen Smith Hammond. My early life was lived in the small, twin villages of Malta and McConnelsville in Morgan County, in midwest Ohio, on the banks of the Muskingum River. Fortunately, I was endowed with excellent health, an abundance of energy, and a deep, quiet faith. After an elementary, secondary, and college education, I was married, and our happy family included three children. I was fortunate to enjoy two professional careers. I evolved to become a realist/pragmatist, independent, with a self-assured, outgoing personality. My organizational skills and memory for facts and details served me well in my careers. However, these same skills, applied later in a social environment, could often be interpreted as those of a know-itall, so I was careful to curb them--not always successfully. My life has taken place during the Great Depression, World War II, and an expanding, global world with its enormous challenges. My central interest has always been my family and my work. My many, many friends from many walks of life have always added to the enrichment of my life. My favorite activity has been traveling the world and attempting to understand the culture and the politics of our global world. I have recorded details of my experiences and reflections during my life in the greatest country in the world, the United States of America."
