The text's commitment to learning begins with a learning method called SQ3R. Made up of five steps–Survey, Question, Read, Recite, and Review–this method provides a foundation for student success.
MyPsychLab is an integral part of Mastering the World of Psychology, 3e. For this edition, we have included a walk-through of MyPsychLab, which highlights the key features of this exciting resource. The end of chapter Summary section now includes a section devoted to MyPsychLab chapter resources, allowing students to reference videos, simulations, and more. Finally, we are please to introduce the “It Video Series” to accompany the Third Edition. These videos have been developed specifically for the book and accompany each of the “It” chapter features.
- Chapter 1 introduces the method to students. The method is reinforced where appropriate throughout the text to show the relationship between psychological theory and learning.
- Chapter opening vignettes: These opening stories, based on real-life events, offer an accessible and interesting introduction into the chapter discussion. The “Looking Back” feature at the end of each chapter reflects upon the vignette and material covered in the chapter.
- Numbered Learning Outcome questions: the Third Edition is now organized around numbered Learning Outcome questions. These questions, which are tied to each of the major sections in the text, appear in the chapter outline, next to the section titles, and in the chapter summary material. In addition, the Instructors Manual and Test Bank are also organized around these same learning outcomes.
- 'Review and Reflect” tables: These comprehensive summary tables help students consolidate major concepts, their components, and their relationships to one another in a visual form that provides a unique study tool.
- Summary sections: Organized around the numbered learning outcome questions, this end of chapter summary provides students with a comprehensive study tool as well as a quick reference to the chapter's key terms by section.
- Built-in Study Guide and Practice Tests: A Study Guide appears at the end of each chapter, allowing students to review the material and quiz themselves on their knowledge of the chapter -- without having to purchase a separate study guide. Critical thinking questions enable students to apply their critical thinking skills to real-world situations and problems. Finally, comprehensive practice tests (2 per chapter) appear at the end of the text for those students wanting further review.
- “Try It”: This updated and popular feature provides simple applied experiments, self-assessments, and hands-on activities.
- “Apply It”: This practical application box combines scientific research with practical advice to show students how to apply psychology to their lives.
- “Explain It”: New to this edition, this feature offers psychological explanations for common, everyday occurrences in life.

- The text and all supplementary material are now organized around numbered Learning Outcome questions. The Learning Outcomes appear in the chapter outline and next to each section of the chapter, helping students identify the key topics in the Introductory Psychology course. The Summary section at the end of the chapter is also organized around these same learning outcomes.
- New “Explain It” chapter feature explains the psychological principles behind common events and phenomena that students encounter in their daily lives. Some examples include: why not everyone is able to hear the Mosquito cell phone ring (Ch. 3); why cramming for a test is an ineffective study method (Ch. 6); why some people are drawn to dangerous hobbies (Ch. 9); and why smoking rates are much higher among those who have schizophrenia (Ch. 12).
- New “It Video Series” available on MyPsychLab features videos and simulations to accompany the Try It, Apply It, and Explain It chapter features. Each video concludes with a detailed explanation from the author, Denise Boyd, and is accompanied by quiz questions.
- The art program has been fully revised for this edition and includes many new figures and tables. The biological figures in particular have been updated so that the brain is now shown in full anatomical context.
- Over 350 new references have been added to this edition, including new research on emerging adulthood, obesity and weight loss, gender differences in the five-factor model, anxiety disorders and schizophrenia, and social roles.
- The supplements package has been fully updated and redesigned to meet the needs of today’s instructors. The Instructor’s Manual and Test Bank now reference the numbered Learning Outcomes from the text, enabling instructors to design their lectures, classroom assignments, and test questions around these outcomes. We now offer two sets of PowerPoint presentations: the first includes detailed lecture outlines and select figures from the text and the second includes the complete set of figures from the text. Many of the supplements now include specific activities and test questions designed specifically around the MyPsychLab resources.
