This book is written in the tradition of an older person telling a story to children in the hopes that they will learn something of their past through the method of oral tradition. The setting is a community Black History celebration day where citizens may present their stories in a public forum. Mattie has just turned one hundred years old, and she wants to pass on a story that has been told and retold for generations in her family.
