Meeting One's True Needs

Autor J. Paul Briggs
en Limba Engleză Paperback
Blaise Pascal, a famous philosopher and scientist of the mid-19th Century, compared the choice of believing in God to be a much better risk than what we are often willing to gamble at the poker table. In any game of cards, we take a chance on winning but risk everything if we lose. When we take a chance on believing in God, however, we lose nothing and yet have the opportunity to win everything, and win it for eternity. But in accepting that our life has a deeply spiritual purpose, an ultimate meaning, how do we know what we are called to be, what God intends for us to do and to be? We have been told God provides the Holy Spirit and a guardian angel to direct, protect, and correct us along the way, and to connect us to God, family, and the right people that God intends for us. God gives us sanctifying grace enabling awareness of His presence in our lives and in others, and helps us achieve His purpose. This is how we meet our true needs.A priest once said, surely for any believer, "God and His promises are as certain as sin and its consequences." God's promises of love and mercy are ever present to all who are open to Him. It must be nurtured, as "one does not live by bread alone, but by the Word of God," ...so reading, hearing and seeing the Good News in action is essential. When one heeds this message, there will always be "a light to one's feet and a lamp to one's path" and the proper motivation enough "to do the next right and loving thing." Faith grows naturally and positively as we see the good all around us and begin to realize God's constant flow of grace, gifts, and miracles in common everyday experiences. This book builds upon the already vast secular and Christian "self-help" literature and attempts to organize, analyze, and interpret the best of both worlds. Though not personalized, the author does provide an integrative account of some of the most useful ideas as experienced over one life's journey. The term "true needs" is introduced to indicate that there are spiritual and social dimensions to our individual "needs." This ironically is counter to the commonly accepted cultural and academic beliefs about our human nature. Understanding the true meaning of life however, requires a complete view of our human nature and needs, and influences how one goes about trying to improve it at every level: individual, social, societal and cultural.
