Wildlife photographer Memory Chance seems to attract strange events. While on location in Africa, a series of animal attacks slaughter her co-workers while leaving her unharmed. Local tribes think she's a witch with supernatural powers. They're closer to the truth than Memory knows.

When deliberately and recklessly provoking an adult grizzly leaves Memory unscathed, she decides she needs answers. Her quest takes her to Apaquaque Island, her birthplace in the remote Atlantic.

There Memory reunites with her enigmatic aunt Katherine and meets Hill, a woman with her own secrets. Intensely attracted to Hill, Memory finds herself opening up to another person for the first time in her life.

Under Hill's careful guidance, Memory undergoes an extraordinary apprenticeship. She discovers she belongs to an ancient and secretive family with intimate connections to the Earth and its creatures. With this knowledge comes power, power her father tried to hide and a ruthless NSA agent craves.

With malignant forces converging on Apaquaque, Memory needs to work closely with Hill to master her newly-awakened powers. Trouble is, working with Hill is distracting. . . .
