Methods of Experimental Physics: Graduate Student Series in Physics

Autor M. I. Pergament
en Limba Engleză Paperback – 10 dec 2019
Based on the modern approach of information theory, this book presents novel experimental techniques, tools, and data processing methods for physics applications. It shows readers how to plan and conduct experiments, design and certify measuring equipment, and process and interpret the experimental data.

Drawing on his extensive experience in experimental research, the author discusses the theory of systems for measuring and recording data, the equipment and methods used for studying fast processes, the basic methods of experimental physics, and the methods for interpretation and data processing. Bringing together approaches that have previously been scattered in the literature, the book covers high-speed photography, Fourier optics, spectroscopy, interferometry, holography, electromagnetic waves, X-rays, and corpuscular investigation.

Notă biografică

Mikhail I. Pergament graduated with a Master’s degree from the Energy Department of the Moscow Institute for Chemical & Mechanical Engineering. He received a Ph.D. in plasma physics from the Efremov Scientific Research Institute of Electrophysical Apparatus (St. Petersburg), a Doctor of Science from Kurchatov Atomic Energy Institute, and the title of Professor in Plasma Physics from Kurchatov Atomic Energy Institute. He is a USSR State Prize Winner and is the author of more than 100 scientific articles.

Recenzii

"Apart from being very competent with the issues of experimental measurement methods and, particularly, the area of measurement and interpretation of information obtained via registration of electromagnetic radiation, M. Pergament possesses a remarkable skill in outlining the problem and showing ways to solve it. Undeniable literary talent combined with the author’s experience and broad-mindedness makes his books not only cognitive in the context of understanding true measurement methods and interpretation of results but also absolutely riveting. All these qualities of the author are demonstrated in this book."
—Professor Valery Kurnaev, Head of Plasma Physics Department, National Research Nuclear University MEPhI
"The author concentrates on the principles of the methods rather than excessive detail to give the reader the ability to plan and conduct experiments and to select the proper equipment for measurements that suit the reader's needs. The clear and concise presentation of each method with the background theory, along with many examples, allows the reader to gain a good understanding of the technique being presented and thus enables the reader to apply this knowledge to their individual situation. ... The background and methods used in this book provide an excellent basis for understanding many useful measurement techniques that can be used to quantify the world around us. Experimentalists using the type of equipment described will thoroughly enjoy this book."
—John J. Shea, from IEEE Electrical Insulation Magazine, November/December 2015
