Appleonia Jones vividly dreamed of incredible girls in white skirts, fighting huge creatures, amalgamations of death, with fire swords and controlled lightning clouds. There was a boy there too, with red hair and freckles, dressed all in black. He shimmered and disappeared. She cracked her eyes and saw the silhouette of Dad's curly hair and pipe in her doorway. Smiling, she pulled the fresh quilt up to her nose. Nana's voice came from the kitchen,"You can't turn down my pancakes." She pulled down the quilt to get a full whiff, until her eyes opened all the way and saw no one in the doorway. It was silly. Of course Dad hadn't been standing there. He died in the Mustang a few days ago and no Nana-cooking would ever bring him back. She pulled the quilt all the way over her head and didn't move. She concentrated on her dream, so intense, now gone. In only a few short months Apple would cross into a new world and start the greatest adventure of her life, with those from her unremembered dream.
