P.J.C. Vedder studied horticulture, and horticultural engineering at Wageningen university and also served in the Dutch army. Worked as an extension service officer for the Dutch government, helping to develop the horticultural industry in the southern part. of The Netherlands. Having an interest in the upcoming mushroom cultivation and thus became involved in mushroom research and training. Under the late Drs. Pieter Bels and Dr. Henriette Bels-Koning in Horst, I studied and worked at the Experimental Station and later was involved for many years in advisory work at mushroom farms. In 1963, I established the world's first Mushroom Training Centre in Horst and have been the principal of that institute for 20 years. My philosophy always has been, not to tell my students, what to do, but instead pairing that with the most available basic information, so that he or she knows why things have to be done in a certain situation. In 1982, I received from the British Mushroom Growers Association, the prestigious Sinden Award, in recognition of outstanding contributions to the Mushroom Industry. His mushroom courses at Horst have a worldwide reputation and have helped innumerable growers, young and not so young, from many countries. In August of 1983, I accepted the position of Vice President Training and Development for Campbell Soup's Mushroom Division and moved to Dublin, Georgia/USA. After work for Campbell Soup, we moved to Italy and lived and worked there for the largest mushroom farm, Funghi del Montello.
