Captain Thomas Hunt Morgan, returning from his second tour in Afghanistan, looks forward to resuming his job as the Deputy Sheriff of Logan County in the mountains of Eastern Kentucky. He was born and raised in the mountains, and except for his time in the military, has been a Deputy Sheriff just like his father and grandfather. He likes the people, their idiosyncratic ways and they, in turn, like and respect him. But he can be mean in a fight and everybody knows it, so he is generally successful in protecting his people from outsiders and from each other. However, these are mountain people who like their moonshine, guns, god and fighting and not necessarily in that order. A body is discovered on Thornton Mountain and he soon finds that things are not right in Logan County. He is ordered by the Sheriff and the County Judge to fix it, so with his cousins, Virgil and Ancil, he sets out to do just that. All three have seen combat in Africa and Afghanistan so they don't mind fighting. And when they feel good, they like to fight; and they feel good a lot especially when the people they are sworn to protect are in danger
