Elmer Ulysses Hoenshel was Principal of Shenandoah Collegiate Institute and School of Music. Hoenshel traveled for 5 months on his own through the Orient. His trip began in Damascus. He journeyed to the Middle East not to indulge in Biblical archaeology but merely to observe and experience. His book is full of simple observations of the land and the "sacred associations" he found there.
