"Come with a wagon to Fargo..". Naomi in 1875 Minnesota receives a mysterious message challenging her to an impossible task. But a long trek across the wilderness of the mid-American prairies may be the only way to save her father, that is, if the message actually is from her father. The stranger who slipped it under her door reminded her of Satan of the biblical book of Job, and she wonders if it is part of the Lord's testing of her and Jacob, the man with whom she's in love. This suspenseful story engages readers through its moving yet historically accurate and detailed description of pioneer life in mid-America, filled with its own tests of survival and hardship, yet lived out in a landscape of awesome beauty. It's a period of change and progress as well, as the story introduces its characters to the new steam threshing machines, telegraph, and railroad. Supported in theme by the Bible's books of Ruth and Job, it is also a story of Christian love and faith, paralleling not only Naomi's story but also that of the Swedish immigrant hired girl, Birgitta. In both, the strength of family ties and loyalty provides a reassuring pathway through the story's well-written narrative to it's final shocking conclusion.
