New Dimensions in Identity Control Theory

Autor Stephen Van Buren
en Limba Engleză Paperback – 26 oct 2013
This study evaluates the structural identity control model to explain variations in stepmothers' self- feelings of authenticity, competence, and worth. The models argue that the verification of stepmother's person, role and social identities produce high levels of self-authenticity, self-competence, and self-worth. The model was tested with data on a sample of 111 respondents. It was found that self- perception on the part of a Stepmother is related to their own, and others', expectations and perceptions of that role. Feelings of self-worth and authenticity are predictable, as are their negative counterparts. The results provide a useful tool to investigate individuals in a variety of social roles, and should be useful to researchers in a broad spectrum of social science applications, from investigating the reactions of individuals in specific social roles, to clarifying the communication process in groups. In addition, the identification of variables in a person's self- identity will prove a useful tool in marketing and public services.
