Consisting of several volumes, the edition 'Sources Relating to the History of Émigré Musicians 1933-1950' records collections of documents relating to the history of music in exile, which have hitherto been neither edited nor catalogued in published indexes. The volumes are arranged by region: Volume 1: Kalifornien (California) is already available, and Volume 2: New York provides access to source material of a further important area of immigration.
Each volume records document collections within the respective region. A subject index has been provided to cover the contents of the sources - official documents such as travel documents, writings, contracts, diaries and, in particular, letters. The documents cover areas such as persecution and emigration, the émigrés' impact on their new home country, reflections on exile in general and on contemporary history. The appendices contain selected sources illustrating the conditions of exile and the various careers of the musicians in question.
