Non-Attic Greek Vase Inscriptions

Autor Rudolf Wachter
en Limba Engleză Hardback – 7 noi 2001
The inscriptions that accompany the painted scenes on non-Attic Greek vases are an extremely important source for knowledge of ancient Greek, in particular colloquial language and signs of foreign dialect. The corpus of material is made all the more valuable because the inscriptions were painted or incised before firing, and thus cannot be held suspect as possible later additions. In this volume, Dr Wachter provides a detailed catalogue of such inscriptions together with a commentary and separate analysis dedicated to the examination of epigraphical, philological, and onomastic aspects of this unusually illuminating type of evidence. This he does in the full context of the vase-paintings and associated myths to which the inscriptions are attached.

Recenzii

... a welcome and much needed work
... the attentive reader will find much of importance, even if he is not a linguist.
The book is meticulously produced, no small achievement given the complexities of linguistic notation. Particularly useful is the large series of drawings of inscriptions, mostly done by the author from autopsy.
... it is timely to have Wachter's comprehensive treatment of the inscriptions on pottery other than Attic.
Wachter is meticulous in his readings ... a gold mine of information that will be plundered for years to come: spelling, dialects, phonology, onomastics and such - all this data is a boon to students of epigraphy, dialects, mythology, ethnicity and so on. It is a solid and painstaking work of reference, and one can only marvel at the industry and dedication of the author ... easy to navigate and is furnished with a generous supply of indices.
Readers who value length, density and sheer volume of information will find plenty to interest them in Non-Attic Greek Vase Inscriptions, with its detailed catalogues and transcriptions of known inscriptions on vases other than those of Athens and south Italy ... convenient and accessible ... seven invaluable indices ... illustrations are well chosen and reproduced ... The quantity and range of information here presented is highly impressive.
