Ocean Energy Conversion: Fundamentals, Technology Development and Optimization

Autor Raymond Alcorn, Tony Lewis, Wanan Sheng
en Limba Engleză Paperback – 31 oct 2021
Ocean Energy Conversion: Fundamentals, Technology Development and Optimizationpresents the collective knowledge of Professors Lewis, Alcorn and Sheng who draw on their 60 combined years of experience in the field to present the basic theory and applications necessary to measure, quantify and convert ocean resources into useful energy. Sections include an overview of the history and potential of ocean energy, wave and tidal resources, climate, world distribution and industry standards. In addition, the principles of energy conversion from waves and tides are covered, including interface, interactions, devices, optimization, control and real-life examples, currents and ocean circulation, and ocean thermal and salinity gradient.
Engineering researchers and professionals will find this to be a go-to reference, especially with its mathematical analysis for designing and deploying ocean energy devices and energy systems. It assumes prior knowledge in mathematics and physics and gives a comprehensive understanding of the mechanisms of ocean energy converters and corresponding resources in a way that is accessible to graduate students, advanced undergraduates, and professionals in industry short courses.

  • Presents a complete overview of the basic physical phenomena for ocean energy, including equations and numerical methods
  • Offers comprehensive, theoretical and applied knowledge for resource assessment, ocean energy conversion systems and different mechanisms of power extraction (and corresponding expected performance)
  • Focuses primarily on wave and tidal energy technologies, while also covering ocean thermal and salinity gradient, including interface, interactions, devices, optimization, control and real- life examples for each type or resource

Notă biografică

Dr. Raymond Alcorn has spent over fifteen years in research, development, commercialization and implementation of ocean energy from a professional background as a Chartered Electrical Engineer. He progressed from first exposure as an undergraduate electrical engineer, through a PhD and subsequent postgraduate research in the field to spend 4 years in a key managerial and technical role with an Australian based commercial wave energy company. He initially moved back to Ireland to manage its Bluepower Initiative in HMRC, a scheme designed to develop Ireland into an international center of excellence for ocean energy research, technology development, manufacture and deployment. In 2015, Dr. Alcorn spun out a company from UCC, Exceedence Ltd, and as CEO is commercializing techno-financial software for renewables in offshore wind, wave and tidal energy. The company has been involved in numerous ocean energy projects and has helped companies, governments and investors understand and unlock their ocean energy resource potential. He has authored and co-authored several publications in the field, including a book, book chapters and a number of scientific articles, and is a member of IEC Technical Mirror Committee (Ireland), as well as leader of the International Energy Agency's Ocean Energy Systems' Annex III and co-author of its report on the Grid Impact Assessment of Ocean Energy.
