Jephthah had placed himself in a conundrum with no solution from his vantage point and knowledge of the Law. And he knew it was his fault. He had made the vow unsolicited of God; and in his black-and-white world that only had the Law of Moses to cling to--that law stating clearly that what you vow unto the Lord must be honored and honored timely--there was no escaping it. Could Jephthah take his own life instead and save his daughter? Certainly he must have contemplated that this might be the solution. But he would have then remembered the commitment he had made to his people to lead them. And that commitment was also a vow made unto God. Yet its setting and circumstances read like a Shakespearean tragedy--steeped in commitment, courage, mind-boggling problems, and the defining price of faith, honor, and obedience.
