On Belay

Autor Raye C. Ringholz
en Limba Engleză Paperback – 30 iun 1997
Paul Petzoldt's climbing feats are legendary. At age sixteen, he stood atop Wyoming's Grand Teton; in 1934, he made an astounding double traverse of the Matterhorn in one day; in 1938 he joined the first American expedition to K2 in the Himalayas and climbed higher than any man had been at that time without auxiliary oxygen; and in 1994, at age eighty-six, he was still scaling summits. But Petzoldt (1908{en}1999) was more than a climber. Wanderlust and a relentless search for adventure were enduring themes in his life. A chance meeting with the dean of St. George's Chapel at Windsor Castle led him to England in 1933, where he mixed with royalty. From there, Petzoldt toured the continent by bicycle and climbed in the Alps as Europe edged toward war. An ill-fated trip to India--where he studied with a mystic--resulted in charges of murder and flight back to the States.

It was as an educator that Petzoldt reached his true zenith. His mission: to teach leadership in the outdoors. After first serving as chief instructor at Colorado Outward Bound, he went on to found both the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) and the Wilderness Education Association. He was the granddaddy of the voice signaling system, the code climbers use to communicate; he also originated many of the outdoor recreation practices that are now standard Leave No Trace principles.

In On Belay author Raye Ringholz traces the evolution of this charismatic and multifaceted man, from his days as a young teen traveling a rocky path of odd jobs and hobo rails to his final years, still inspiring all listeners. Ringholz, who knew him for over thirty years, deftly shows how the facts of Petzoldt's life were even more astonishing than the myth.
