Genevieve McBain is plagued by dreams of the past. Close to her granddaughter, Becky, she shares tales of her childhood with the help of a family photograph album, twisting the truth, portraying Lettie, her exotic French mother, as a warm character and her childhood as idyllic despite the absence of her father, James. She does not reveal that Lettie is still alive and living two hundred miles away.

After a funeral, there's a discovery of a portrait of a girl, Electra. The artist, Robbie Snow, has a studio nearby. She persuades Genevieve to go with her when she meets him. Meanwhile they discover that, Cerys, Genevieve's daughter, is having marital difficulties and when she returns home reveals a dark secret about Lettie to her.

The group of friends meet again to see if they can discover who is leaving flowers on the grave of Sadie, Genevieve's first daughter. The man they discover has more to reveal about Genevieve's family.
