Police leadership development has evolved significantly over the past twenty-five years. The former "command-and-control" models of obsolete police leadership methods are simply no longer viable with the modern people that are currently joining police forces in North America. While there is copious amounts of literature available in terms of "best practices" and "core competencies" of effective leadership, contemporary thinking requires an improved approach to leadership practices that will be in alignment with the expectations of the newer generations of police officers in service today.
