When Rose Carlisle came down South to live in the Abernathy Projects after getting pregnant at fifteen, she had no idea of the kind of life that was in store for her. Rose's daughter, Rose May, with all of her beauty, is caught up in the belly of the beast, the underworld of drugs, prostitution, and every vile thing that goes along with it. Rose does everything in her power to snatch her daughter back from the beast of her addiction; and she does for a while, until Rose introduces her to a fine, smooth-talking preacher who happens to be running revival at the Mount Jubilee Missionary Baptist Church. Not only does he seduce Rose May with his smooth words of consolation; he also becomes her first baby-daddy. Rose is devastated as the world of drugs, sex, and money consumes her only child. She has only three people in which she can depend: Bessie, her friend for life; Tony, who has been in love with Rose May since she was a rosy-cheeked little girl with a full-blown eating disorder; and God, who has not failed her yet. As Rose embarks on a journey that will bring her closer and closer to the plan that God has for her life, she discovers that she must come to terms with the role she played in Rose May's addictions. Rose is ultimately faced with the insurmountable task of raising Rose May's three boys who have taken on each of their father's spirits: the eldest, Elijah, the son of the preacher, kindhearted and faithful; Ezra, the son of a woman-beating, thugged-out pimp, mean, abusive, and just plain evil; and finally, Philemon, who loves dressing in his grandmother's clothes. Rose will discover that in order to live life and live it in abundance, she and her family will have to discover the meaning of God, who He is, and how they must all ultimately take on "Our Father's Spirit."
