At first glance Ron Ehemann's debut novel, Out Of Body, seems a simple retelling of a very old tale. At its core, it is a love story. And, like many such stories it has a twist. Like many real love stories, sometimes the twist gets really twisted.To be precise, this story is not a single love story but rather several, all told by the same man. Out Of Body's protagonist, Chadwick White, wakes up each morning with a new and different boyfriend. These aren't hook-ups or one night stands. Each boyfriend comes with his own history and a lifetime of memories. Chadwick is, quite literally, living several apparently simultaneous lives.Some of the boyfriends love him, some hate him; some mornings Chadwick knows what's going on, some mornings he hasn't a clue. Each day the story unfolding seems to begin anew. Indeed, what you get with Out Of Body is several short stories told as one.Out Of Body has been called a gay Ground Hog Day because Chadwick's life keeps starting over and over but that's where the comparison ends. There are two contradistinctions with that movie. First, each day in Chadwick's life is vastly different from the prior day, and; unlike Ground Hog Day, nothing in Out Of Body is funny. Written in the first person, Out Of Body reads more like Oprah's hot potato pick, A Million Little Pieces. It is just as controversial as that best seller; just as raw and abrasive. Out Of Body takes its readers into private places. Places we sometimes feel we weren't supposed to be. There is another similarity between Out Of Body and best selling A Million Little Pieces. Both are presented as memoirs. By writing in the first person, Ehemann gives his story authenticity. Though he disassociates his own life from that of his lead character in the book's blurb, he also dedicates the publication to all of his past boyfriends (and there've been a lot!) Though fiction; Out Of Body reads real. As Chadwick White, Ehemann takes his readers from boyfriend to boyfriend, painting private pictures of life on the inside. You'll feel these characters and probably recognize some as well, though hopefully not too well. You'll love some and hate some and all the while wonder just what in the hell is really happening to Chadwick White.Out Of Body has the look and feel of pornography, but it's definitely not. You will find plenty of sex in the text, but it feels more authentic than pornography; more authoritative.That's what makes publisher, Nazca Plains perfect for this product. It will rub you emotionally raw. It will leave you with more questions than answers. And; it will entertain.
