Parental Spanking Bans and Societal Disinterest in Children

Autor Harold A. Hoff
en Limba Engleză Paperback
The science behind parenting styles that employ constructive physical discipline to enforce behaviour continues to dispel a long list of myths in attempts to ban it. Yet, there are many (mostly EU) countries that have banned moderate parental "spanking" or "smacking" beginning with Sweden in 1979. There is a growing list of known harms inflicted on children, parents and societies by these injunctions. For example, since Sweden's bans, they have experienced astonishingly higher rates of child abuse, violence on and by children, and rape of children. Yet, some of the harms caused by these injunctions may not be so obvious. From many interviews, these bans appear to be a drag on childbirth. But is that deterrent effect large enough to be measured? This study examines the relationship between societal disinterest in children and spanking bans. It explores which affects the other or if these are circular, each reinforcing the other until fertility rates collapse to the "Point of no Return," In other words, are these bans a by-product or a cause in this process of "Self-extinction through enlightenment"?
