Parental Spanking Bans

Autor Harold A. Hoff
en Limba Engleză Paperback
The science behind parenting styles that employ constructive physical discipline to enforce behaviour continues to dispel a long list of myths in attempts to denigrate it. Yet, there are many (mostly EU) countries that have banned moderate parental "spanking" or "smacking" beginning with Sweden in 1979. The list of harms inflicted on children, parents and societies by these injunctions continues to become quite clear. For example, since Sweden's bans, they have experienced astonishingly higher rates of child abuse, violence on and by children, and rape of children. Another negative effect of these injunctions is inducing resentment and defensiveness in parents. The EU is showing this deterrence aggravates collapsing fertility rates, costing these societies up to one-half childbirth lost per female. This study explores the opinion that raising children with constructive physical discipline causes increased alcoholism and substance abuse when they become adults. This study of various societal comparatives finds no empirical support for this myth. Rather, every measure indicates countries with spanking injunctions experience rising rates of alcoholism and drug-induced deaths in children raised under these bans. Spanking does not induce these harms. Rather its removal is associated with increasing these harms, and most evident in the countries with the longest standing bans.
