Paris Night

Autor Roderick D'Entrac
en Limba Engleză Paperback
Paris Night is a gripping thriller constructed around an Islamic terrorist attack of the type which targeted the French satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo and killed its main cartoonists on January 7, 2015. The novel gives insights also into the context of such French "affaires" as the sex scandal which prevented Strauss-Khan from becoming president, and the betrayal which ended the affair between Trierweiler and President Hollande over his sexcapades on a scooter. Paris Night continues to be ominously ahead of events, and of new scandals which emerge every month and at times every week, ranging from tax evasion to suspect commissions on arms sales. A central theme forewarned of the ever-increasing threat of a catastrophic terrorist attack. The murderous raid on Charlie Hebdo for publishing cartoons of Mohamed with a bomb on his head coincides with the publication of a controversial book, "Soumission" by Michel Houellebecq which highlights the political influence of Islam in France. One of the sub-plots in Paris Night foresaw the invasion of Ukraine by Russia, and another foreshadowed a recent scandal in which an eminence grise to the then President Sarkozy secretly recorded the president in the Elysee Palace so as to have a political insurance policy. President Hollande has warned that corruption and political intrigue, together with economic and political sclerosis, lie behind a moral and institutional crisis which threatens the survival of the Fifth Republic. This has become a focus of national debate since the book was published. Paris Night, in telling a cracking story, explores how corruption can cause slow rot and put a nation in danger. It is also a comment on decadence and the need for people with courage to fight for high principles. The plot, and the characters, are powered by betrayal, murder, revenge, redemption, money, sex, hatred and love in a long, hot summer. A terrorist conspiracy, with roots in Iran and the Middle East and North Africa, threatens the United States and Europe from without; decades of dirty deeds threaten France from within. Enter Titus Mallory, an expert on risk management, with roots in Massachusetts, a life in Europe and danger at his back. And Delphine, the lawyer with a double life, executive by day and femme fatale by night; and Leila the student with dangerous secrets and a fatal mission. They are about to encounter the forces of darkness: Kir, a young woman scarred by gang rape, driven by sex and sworn to terror; and the Lizard...the perfect assassin. From the murder of an agent in New York to decadence in France emerges a putrid world of shadows without light. The reader is taken on a deadly voyage from the New to the Old world, through the sounds and smells of bistros, cafes, cobbled streets and vineyards, to the gilded staterooms of power and the perils of political prostitution. Paris Night, ten years in the making, is a thriller of action and suspense: it is also an elegantly written investigation of the underskirts of France which the tourist never sees or explores, except through news headlines beyond the reach of fiction."
