My young readers, Young Adult, and New Adult readers (16+ teens and college age) are so afraid of failure that it breeds inaction and the inability to follow ones dreams, and goals. In fact, that's the moral and the perplexity of Pauline who was judged by her cover, but she wasn't afraid to persevere. She was able to overcome her fear of failure. Now I'm talking both about the Pauline in my story and the Pauline in "The Perils of Pauline." After all my book is a comedic parody set in the eighties on the old classic. It's 1985 in San Xavier, Arizona, and Pauline Schmidt's first full-time job isn't quite what she'd hoped. Working as a teller at the local post office provides a steady paycheck, but none of the adventures the 22-year-old-who wants to become a police detective or crime analyst-prefers. So when she overhears a conversation between her boss and visiting building inspector Matt Grayson about shoddy materials being used in the construction of post offices, including her own, Pauline offers to go undercover as a temporary typist in San Xavier's building inspection division. The new position gives Pauline the chance to search through city files and dig up gossip about Bill Graham, a former building inspector suspected of taking kickbacks. As part of the undercover assignment, Matt poses as Pauline's boyfriend. Through daily meetings, they keep each other up-to-date on the latest details of the case. Pauline begins to think they might have a future together. But then ... Pauline's Perils of Perplexity is a parody of the classic comedy, The Perils of Pauline. Wagen's book is a comedic tale featuring another Pauline trying to find her way in life while searching for romance. So don't just judge my book or Pauline by its cover.
