The PC and Mac Handbook: systems, upgrades and troubleshooting is a compendium of information about PCs and Macs that is not normally available or supplied as standard with manufacturers' documentation. It combines practical experience and guidance with reference material to provide help and information for anyone using, building, upgrading, fault finding or just interested in a computer. One major advantage offered by the IBM compatible PC is the easy availability of its component parts, allowing systems to be continually upgraded. It is now even possible to build a PC using these parts. However, while the disk drives, controller and mother boards and all the other parts are easy to obtain, the information on how to connect them, and more importantly, potential problems, is not. With the PC becoming a mature product, many suitable components can be obtained at a very low cost from the many outlets that specialise in redundant or surplus stock. Although there are many bargains to be had, some specialised knowledge is needed to identify how suitable a part may be and its compatibility. It is this information and experience which is essential to anyone contemplating an upgrade or even purchasing a PC in the first place. It is this information and approach that forms the backbone of this book. The structure of the book splits the various aspects into chapters with some dedicated to the IBM PC or Mac and some where there is a large amount of common ground covering both machines. Each chapter starts with an explanation of the technology involved and gradually moves through technical detail and finishes with explanations and examples. To help illustrate these points, screen shots have beenincluded from both Macs and IBM PCs. The inclusion of the Apple Mac provides a much needed source of information for Apple Mac users. Considering how both the IBM PC and Apple Mac are sharing many components such as disk drives, this book can guide a user who is contemplating switching from one machine to another, over what may or may not be re-usable. In addition, by covering both machines, it is easy to provide help and guidance to those who use both machines. A whole chapter is devoted to explaining how to move data from one machine to another using serial links, floppy disks and other methods.
