Peace Through Sacrifice

Autor Brian Deutsch, Catherine Plunkett
en Limba Engleză Hardback – feb 2023
A carefully selected collection of World War I images, showcasing a range of striking, rare and personal photographs of the conflict. This is the pictorial story of the triumph of the human spirit through conflict during World War I's four long years of trench warfare, aerial combat and naval clashes. These thought-provoking images of leaders, soldiers, sailors, airmen, and those who were committed to their care and healing, demonstrate that even during the worst of times, simple human compassion and collaboration often prevails.Through featuring many memorable yet relatively unknown images, some taken by ordinary soldiers rather than official war photographers, and others gathered from great UK photographic archives such as the Hulton-Deutsch Collection, the Keystone library, Alamy, and the National Library of Scotland, the great treasures of our pictorial history hidden in these collections is revealed.

Caracteristici

Now over one hundred years since the Armistice, there are no longer any living witnesses to the global waste of human lives, but their memories live on in the pictures taken on the spot by the new easy to use portable cameras. The pictures, some taken by official war photographers, but many by ordinary soldiers give this picture history a window on life at the front with a personal touch.

Notă biografică

Brian Deutsch's interest in photography was the result of purchasing the Hulton Picture Library from the BBC in 1989. It proved to be the beginning of a love affair with images. He is also a keen reader of history, has been a cardholder at the Bodleian Library since the age of 17 and is a past fellow of Corpus Christi College Cambridge.
