On August 6, 1960, housemothers met Joe Knight and his four siblings at the gate of the Baptist Children's Home in Thomasville, N. C., took their hands, and walked them to the next chapter of their lives. Joe Knight, who was ten years old, looked back at his mother, Ruth Talley Knight. She was trembling and crying.
