In the fall of 2004, scientists from Chicago's Field Museum conducted a biological inventory in the forests of the Comunidad Nativa Matsés in the northeastern region of the Peruvian Amazon. This assessment, presented in English, Spanish, and Matsés, collects their research on the plant and animal ecology of the Amazon, includes a brief history of the region and the indigenous Matsés people, and concludes with recommendations for the region’s long-term management.

Corine Vriesendorp is a conservation ecologist with the Environmental and Conservation Programs at the Field Museum, Chicago. N. Pitman is science director at the Amazon Conservation Association in Washington, D.C. J. I. Rojas Moscoso is a freelance biologist in Tambopata, Peru. B. A. Pawlak works at the Field Museum. L. Rivera Chávez is director of the Centro para el Desarrollo del Indígena Amazónico (CEDIA) in Peru. L. Calixto Méndez is a lead anthropologist at CEDIA. M. Vela Collantes is the current leader of the Matsés native community, and P. Fasabi Rimachi is a member of the Matsés community.
