Recenzii
[An] excellent example from the bourgeoning field of the philosophy of animal minds. [It] should be essential reading for those working to develop a greater understanding of animals, mind, and ethics.
Personhood, Ethics, and Animal Cognition is thus both a valuable piece of scholarship and an engaging discussion of timely ethical issues.
Considering how important Varner's book is to current debatesan animal ethics and welfare, I hope its publication leads to an increase in the number of studies focussed on autonoetic consciousness and the start of the search for biographical conciousness in animals. Certainly this book is likely to frame both the science of animal welfare and debate on animal ethics for some time to come. In fact, it may well turn out to be one of the seminal works on animal ethics of the 21st century.
This book is an important, complex contribution to the continuing debate about the moral status of animals ... Recommended.
This is an important addition to the literature on nonhuman animal welfare and rights with some potential implications for environmental ethics left us with this excellent and original contribution to the debate about animal welfareor, at least, vertebrate welfare.
This book is worth reading for the numerous interesting philosophical contributions it makes to the literatures on animal ethics, personhood, and utilitarianism in general.
In Personhood, Ethics, and Animal Cognition, Gary Varner weaves metaethics and ethical theory (part one) with applied ethics and animal science (part two) to yield a rich and insightful discussion of the norms that should guide our treatment of animals ... Varners book is essential reading for those interested in understanding the ethics of human-animal relationships and the underlying issues of moral status.
