Amidst the bigotry and cruelty of the Civil War, fate brought together two young soldiers, one white and one black. Together they struggled to survive but were ultimately "wrenched apart" at the hands of the Confederacy upon their capture. In the end, Sheldon Russell Curtis, the white boy, survived to tell this story.
