Formed from portions of Wood, Tyler, and Ritchie Counties, Pleasants County was founded in 1851 and was named after Gov. James Pleasants Jr. of Virginia. Notă biografică

Author Ellen Dittman Pope is a resident of Parkersburg who grew up in Pleasants County. She is the reference librarian for West Virginia University-Parkersburg, where she is able to share her passion for preserving history. Coauthor Ruth Ann Dayhoff lives in Belmont and has taught the youths in Pleasants County for more than 35 years. Both have authored previous publications; however, this is their first book with Arcadia Publishing.
