Descriere
The Wyandot tribe called the area TuEndieWei, which roughly translates to "where the rivers meet," because of its position at the confluence of the Kanawha and Ohio Rivers. George Washington referred to it as a "pleasant point" while he surveyed the land as a young man. He would later consider the town as the capital of the 14th American colony, Vandalia. While this colony never developed, it was nevertheless an important part of the American Revolution, as the first battle occurred at Point Pleasant on October 10, 1774, between Col. Andrew Lewis's Virginia militia and Chief Cornstalk's army of Shawnee warriors. The Virginians prevailed, allowing for colonial expansion west of the Ohio River. Over the next two centuries, Point Pleasant thrived as a major transportation center for river traffic. The rivers' history also includes great catastrophes, such as the nation's worst bridge disaster when the Silver Bridge fell in 1967, claiming 46 lives. Point Pleasant has always been a subtle crossroads of American history, with many triumphs and tragedies.

Article Title: Second history book planned for county
Author: Nicole Fields
Date: 11/10/2008
Fresh off the success of their latest publishing project, local tourism officials are preparing for another picture and caption book about the area.
According to Denny Bellamy, chairman of the Mason County Convention and Visitors Bureau, Images of Americaas aPoint Pleasant, a which was released last year, has generated approximately $10,000 in revenue. It details the history of the city and the major events that have transpired over the past several decades, with 128 pages that contain more than 200 images. The book is divided into six chapters: Boomtown, Rivers Rising, River City, Postwar Prosperity, The Silver Bridge Disaster and After the Fall.
aThe book still sells really good. We still sell a lot of them at the tourism center, a Bellamy said, adding that the books are especially popular around the holidays.
The CVB now is preparing for its second pictorial history book, which also will be an Images of America edition. Bellamy said the new book, with a tentative title of aImages of America: Mason County, a will be compiled and written by Jason Bolte, who last year served as Vista project coordinator with the CVB and researched and wrote the first book.
Bolte, who now works as a Web editor for CCP Games and White Wolf Publishing, said he plans to follow the same guidelines for this latest project, with three sections set to focus on the Mason/New Haven river communities; the towns along the Kanawha River; and Point Pleasant and the towns along the lower half of the Ohio River.
Bolte said he wants to usesome new images of Point Pleasant, but because he already did an entire book on the city, he wants this book to show that there is more to Mason County than its county seat.
He added that he needs the same types of photographs for this project that he used in the Point Pleasant book: original copies of historical photographs from the Mason County area. That includes postcards, family photographs and archived pictures a athe older, the better, a he said a but he needs photographs that are unique and in their original condition.
aI am open to talking to anybody about this book, a Bolte said. aThis book is about the people of Mason County, so I would like to get photographs from the people of the county. Thatas why I would love to see family photographs and personal archives especially.a
Although Bolte plans to make at least three trips to the area in the coming months, he said most of the work for this book will be done via e-mail and telephone. He added that the book will be released nationwide, but he doesnat have a firm release date yet. He does hope to have the book completed by June.
According to a news release, Arcadia Publishing is the leading publisher of local and regional history in the United States. The companyas mission is to make history accessible and meaningful through the publication of books on the heritage of Americaas people and places.
Pictures and information for the book also can be dropped off at the tourism center during regular business hours. For more information, call the tourism center at 304-675-6788 or contact Bolte at jmbolte@gmail.com or 513-505-5319.
