We are in the early stages of a complete change in our religious beliefs, a change so profound we have never seen the like since we became conscious five or six thousand years ago; we are bringing the birth of God inside our psychology. New discoveries show that human consciousness experiences Awe deep inside and that the Awe feels like God. This Awe has evolved in us and is the reason our species has thrived. This Awe inspires us to live in relation to it and to each other. We feel drawn to it and we get the energy of hope from it and the guidance of conscience from it. We feel as if we are born from the Awe. We did not know about evolution or psychology, so when we felt the Awe, we assumed it was outside us. All we attributed to Gods outside us came from our experience of the Awe inside us. There may be a God or Gods outside us, or there may not be; the reason we believe in them is we cannot help believing in the Awe inside us and we created a being or beings outside us to explain what we experience. All the power and majesty and wonderfulness of belief are real, but they are about something in our psychology, not about something outside us. Change so profound is frightening. We need to tame our hate and increase our hope to comfort our fear. This book is part of that process.
