Port of Climax is a modern western saga that traverses four mountain states, over 168 days, in 1982. The epic journey spans two Countries high atop the Continental Divide ... a story of an undying love... a love lost forever and the heroic trek taken by Tom Latimer in a last attempt to save his family. Facing adversaries, from a corrupt banker and religious persecutors, to the life-long hatred of a powerful enemy, he endures until his life is taken, but not without just retribution.
The stage was set for Bozeman, as the cast of characters made their way to the little hamlet in Southern Montana. One was an old man that had been given a second chance in his life. One was a brother seeking recognition. Another was a young man, living the adventure of a lifetime. Three were just followers. One was a criminal and seasoned killer. One was a man trying to seek forgiveness from an old friend. Another was a dedicated law officer on the quest of enhancing his own career. One was a powerful and corrupt man, festering with hatred... and the eleventh was a man that offered life a handshake and looked you straight in the eye.
Autumn had cycled once again... an uncharacteristic snow squall had blanketed this portion of Southern Canada with seven inches of fresh, wet snow... and it continued to fall. Migrating flocks of ducks and geese were quickly gathering, hastening their early departures. Rocky outcrops and clumps of brush were all that protruded through the thick cover of snow on this bleak and remote prairie... all except a riderless horse and a dying man.

Notă biografică

Port of Climax, an adventure saga, is the first of three novels that Rol Wellman has written. The second manuscript, "Buffalo Willows," is a romance novel and the third, "The Ballad of Looney McPike," is a comedy. All three novels will classify as Modern Western genre.

Rol Wellman has lived the lives of the characters in his books. He still has the pistol he packed on his hip in Wyoming. In the 1880's, his great grandfather traded cattle with a buckboard in the eastern Sandhills of Nebraska. Around World War I, his father bought and loaded cattle at railheads throughout Wyoming and Western Nebraska. Mr. Wellman started "tagging along" with his father shortly after World War II. Over the years, he has owned ranches in Colorado, Wyoming, Idaho and Oregon. He has shipped cattle and wild horses by rail and finally, he owned and operated a 1,000 head cow outfit in British Columbia. Along the way, he owned a rodeo string and sale barn in Wyoming and was the founder of one of the largest cattle order buying companies in North America.

For the last thirty years, he jotted down stories about characters whose paths he had crossed and who had frequented the same country he had ridden on horseback. When his health started failing, he wrote Port of Climax, a modern western saga that traverses four mountain states, over 168 days, in 1982. The epic journey spans two countries high atop the Continental Divide.

In 2003, Gail Manchur, ABS Literary Agency, Ashland, Oregon read Port of Climax and immediately signed Mr. Wellman to a contract. She even procured a wonderful review from an award winning Non-Fiction Publisher. Since then, Mr. Wellman suffered several health setbacks and events dictated that Mrs. Manchur retire from representing works of fiction. The 19th of May, 2005, Rol Wellman lost his dear wife of forty-five years. She was his inspiration and the reason he now intends to pick up the pieces and get their three novels published in her memory.
