The world that we live in is much different than it was 10, 20, or 30 years ago. Long gone are the days of people trying to be self-sufficient using garden tools on land passed down through generations. This is a post-modern world after all of the philosophizing and art grandeur of the past. This is the age of technology, advertising, and self-actualization. Jeremy Alexander Duhart lays out some of the characteristics of this post-modern age in poems like "Marketer" and "Simulacrum."
