Power Shift: On the New Global Order
Autor Richard Falken Limba Engleză Hardback – 14 aug 2016
In Power Shift, Richard Falk, a UN expert on international law, puts forth a challenging set of observations on the changes in global politics that have occurred since the end of the Cold War, with a close focus on the massive transformations in relations with the Middle East after the 9/11 attacks. Falk argues that American militarism during the past twenty years has significantly reframed geopolitics, and he provides a scathing critique of many common practices and policies, including the recourse to torture, preventive war, drone technology, and diplomacy by threat.
In this sophisticated interpretation of geopolitics from a progressive perspective, Falk offers a powerful critique of mainstream thinking, illustrating how the overall effects of today’s policies produce extremely cruel outcomes for people living in the Global South, the Middle East, and Africa. Unifying his argument with a desire for global justice and sustainable peace, Falk provides a provocative analysis of the new world order that is currently developing.

Recenzii
“Eloquently written by the world’s leading international lawyer, Falk’s new book is an absolute must read for anyone seeking to understand power shifts in the world order and our human condition in the early 21st century.”
“Original, eloquent, challenging and hopeful, Richard Falk is always worth reading.”
“Falk is always ahead in identifying the perils of our time. Emerging but neglected issues are here addressed with passion and rationality. The book contains an inspiring message to global civic activists striving to constrain abuses of power and to provide viable alternatives.”
“For almost half a century, in classics such as This Endangered Planet and A Study of Future Worlds, Falk has brought powerful moral and legal insights to debates about order and justice in world politics. In this collection of essays, he argues that the international system is in the midst of a protracted, perilous, but ultimately progressive movement from what he calls 'the old geopolitics' to 'a new geopolitics.' As Falk sees it, the old order—defined by a Western-dominated system of states and by global capitalism and realist ideology—is incapable of solving the cascading problems of armed violence, environmental catastrophe, despotism, corruption, and human suffering. For Falk, even the liberal internationalist vision of enlightened state leaders working through the UN and other global bodies is insufficient to the task.”
“Power Shift . . . is full of interesting insights and displays an impressive degree of rhetorical power. For all those who are in search of a forceful, mostly Left critique of the status quo, this book is a must-read.”
