Her mother, Adele, has her sights set on the handsome and eligible Alex Kavinsky as the perfect match for Rose. He is a plastic surgeon and a member of one of Manhattan's wealthiest families.

Marvin Zorsky is a struggling writer and son of a bookshop merchant and seems, at first blush, a most unlikely prospect for Rose. However, Rose gradually comes to see her expectations in Alex and Marvin change, in ways that take her by surprise, since life is not all about what is on the surface.
