Recenzii
Although the deepest stratum of Eliot's character was Puritan, Dal-Yong Kim's book is the only full study of the Puritanism of Eliot's poetry. Dr. Kim shows that the very lines in Eliot's poetry that speak most powerfully to modern readers paradoxically owe that power to a Puritan sensibility our culture apparently rejects. This important study describes the way Eliot's return to the roots of his New England heritage recovers a way of feeling that helps to account for the freshness and moral acuity of Eliot's work. (Timothy Materer, University of Missouri-Columbia) Nowadays any discussion of Puritan elements in the work of T.S. Eliot is prone to lapse into critical banality. In this book, however, the author succeeds in throwing a new light on this topic through his perspicacious re-evaluation of Puritan influence on the formation of Eliot's historical sense and aesthetic vision. There is no doubt that this book is a major addition to the Eliot critique. (Sangok Lee, Seoul National University) Professor Kim's study is insightful and stimulating, as well as a pleasure to read. It is a valuable addition to the Eliot shelf, proving something we've all suspected. (Robert Overstret, Auburn University)
