In Britain, rape crisis centers have provided the most effective and valued source of support for survivors of rape ever since the centers were developed through the 1970's women's movement. Yet now, at the same time as Britain is failing survivors of rape in the courts, there is also a threat to the centers' work. This book explores and explains: how it has gotten to this point of crisis and what needs to be done * the knowledge, ideas, and skills that comprise the centers' unique model of support * the struggles to create and sustain the centers. Documenting the work and story of rape crisis in England and Wales, and drawing comparisons with similar centers and networks in Scotland and Ireland, this book provides a flavor of the original rape crisis work and presents practical ideas for ways forward.
