I see the text as catering for two types of reader. First, those who are following a taught course in several different areas or disciplines where it provides a clear framework on the various aspects that have to be considered when carrying out a project, as well as a starting point on a wide range of research methods. Second, for lone researchers or small research teams who use it more as a one stop shop (previous editions are widely cited by researchers in published material). To serve each of these needs, it is necessary for it to be a somewhat bulky text although I do not envisage the third edition as longer than the second.
