Ruth suffers from Alzheimer's and Margot cares for her. Next-door neighbor Sue is Margot's confidant and buddy. Estelle Delsey, the stodgy widow who has installed herself as Mitchell's ultimate arbiter of taste and standing in the community, is a key member of Paul's congregation. Ruth's dementia, and the needs it creates, provide Mrs. Delsey with the opportunity to soothe her guilty conscience from her history with her own mother-in-law. As Ruth's decline continues, the family faces impossible choices. Paul's older brother and the Goodharte family black sheep, Matthew, arrives on the scene with his own opinions about their mother's care-and an eye for Sue, who hides a history of hurts from everyone but her best friend Margot.
