Progressive reformers successfully destroyed the State legislature control over federal government growth with the 17th Amendment. They intended to use the new unrestricted power of the federal government to advance their social and economic changes on ordinary citizens. The reformers were the tyrants the founding fathers were concerned would violate individual rights of citizens.
