Recenzii
Nevertheless, G. writes clearly and provides plenty of signposts along the way, helping readers follow the development of the argument. This monograph on an important topic clearly establishes its thesis and should receive a warm welcome from specialists in Augustine's theology and the rhetorical tradition in late antiquity.
Although the scope of Gronewoller's monograph is enormous, he has managed to provide a succinct and learned guide for Augustine's use of certain features of rhetorical theory in his theology
logically structured and clearly understandable ... succeeds in broadening and sharpening scholars' view of Augustine's rhetorical thought in theological contexts
...a succinct and learned guide for Augustine's use of certain features of rhetorical theory in his theology.
This is a thought provoking monograph...Much of this book's analysis is illuminating, its structure is very clear and neat, and the language is elegant, and precise without being, overly burdened by technical vocabulary.
His analysis of rhetorical economy is clear, learned and, well, economical. Students of Augustine will benefit from engaging with this book if for no other reason than to hear the call not to neglect the importance of Augustine's rhetorical training for the interpretation of his theological writings.
This book should appeal to historians, scholars of classical rhetoric, and historical and constructive theologians interested in how Augustine's Latin rhetorical context influenced his theology at a deep and hitherto unexplored level.
Gronewoller's book is an excellent piece of scholarship. It is so excellent thatit makes the reader dream of new frontiers of inquiry. The lasting question on mymind, however, is the mirror opposite of Gronewoller's. Gronewoller claims-and demonstrates with striking clarity-that Greco-Roman rhetoric informedAugustine's understanding of creation, history, and evil. What I am left wonderingis how his notions of creation, history, and evil informed his thoughts on rhetoric.
