Riding With Cochise: The Apache Story of America's Longest War

Autor Steve Price
en Limba Engleză Hardback – 5 iul 2023
Riding With Cochise brings the violent drama of the American Southwest to life through the eyes of the legendary Apache chieftain Cochise and three other tribal leaders, Geronimo, Victorio, and Mangas Coloradas.  Relying largely on the oral histories told by relatives of these great warriors as well as personal diaries of others who were involved, veteran author Steve Price takes the reader deep into the Cochise Stronghold, through Massacre Canyon, and across Apache Pass.  You’ll sit beside the campfires of Tom Jeffords, the only white man Cochise ever fully trusted, and touch the faded stone walls of Fort Craig, the rock cairns at Dragoon Springs, and the magnificent cottonwoods at Ojo Caliente.  You’ll be with General George Crook and Lt. Charles Gatewood as they pursue Geronimo through New Mexico, Arizona and even into Mexico’s Sierra Madre, and learn how a handful of Apache warriors could disappear into open desert, ride and sleep on horseback, and outwit thousands of American and Mexican troops for months at a time.  Thoroughly researched and written in the author’s easy but fast-paced story-telling style, Riding With Cochise presents a sweeping history of how one Native American tribe fought desperately to keep its land and its culture in the face of America’s westward expansion known as Manifest Destiny, then spent 27 years in exile and captivity before finally being allowed to return to their beloved homeland.

Recenzii

“Steve Price’s attention to detail is evident in every paragraph as he describes, in his highly readable story-telling style, how the Apaches under the leadership of Cochise, Geronimo, and other chiefs, fought for decades to preserve their culture and their homeland. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in American history and especially the story of this revered chieftain.” —SAMMY LEE, President, Sammy Lee Enterprises, Inc.

“Riding With Cochise provides new insights by direct descendants of famous Apache war chiefs into the Apache’s fight to protect their land through broken treaties and promises that led to bloody,  brutal battles. Steve Price puts you in the saddle, by the campfires, and in the canyons and mountains where it all happened.” —LOUIE STOUT, Michiana Outdoors News

“This book will fill in the historical gaps in the Apaches’ story for many of us. Once you begin Riding With Cochise you'll find it hard to put down." —TOM JENKINS, author of Where Custer Fell, a Native American Perspective

“Steve Price has done it again. His immaculate research brings the early wild west days to life as he documents the lives of Cochise, Geronimo and others of the Apache Nation. Readers will also enjoy
chapters detailing how they, too, can travel along the same trails ridden by these chieftains. Riding With Cochise is truly an enjoyable read for everyone.” —BILL BAAB, Outdoor Editor, The Augusta Chronicle

In Praise of Steve Price's previous books:

“You don’t. have to be a horseman to enjoy America’s Wild Horses by Steve Price. It is a fascinating historical account of the wild horses still roaming parts of the American West and the important role they have played in the growth of our nation. His countless hours of research, photos, and anecdotal stories will provide stimulating discussions around corrals and campfires for years to come.” --LOUIE STOUT, former staff writer, South Bend Tribune

“If you are wise enough to carry this wonderful guide, Steve Price’s Seasonal Guide to the Natural Year, you will be able to find that ‘union of time, place, and biological circumstance’ so delicate it takes one’s breath away.”-- NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC TRAVELER

“Steve Price is not an armchair photographer and writer. He rolls up his sleeves and gets into his subject with a large helping of heart and soul. This book, Valley of the Big Cats, provides us a chance to visit a little-known region. In Africa that today remains much as it was centuries ago. The images are a visual smorgasbord, and provide all the necessary reasons why we must preserve these last pockets of the wild.” --
GENE MUELLER, Washington Times

The Fish That Changed America by Steve Price is an exciting and detailed look at why anglers are so obsessed with bass fishing! The factual stories of how it all came to be and the lives of the pioneers involved give me even more reason to love the sport!” -- MICHAEL IOCANELLI, professional angler and TV personality
